My bike did the exact same thing, and like you said it appears that were not the first. I have the feeling that the gears breaking may have something to do with the starter clutch malfunctioning, if that were so I think it would be due to the gears being engaged while the engine is running. The gears are not cheap, I decided to hunt around for them instead of getting them new and I finally found one in seattle and two in spokane, 50 for the big one and 70 for both little ones, that is a steal, look on ebay though, they usually have something.
